This process avoids plastics ending up in landfills, incinerators or oceans. An estimated 8 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year, in addition to the estimated 150 million tonnes already circulating in marine environments, according to the NGO Ocean Conservancy. If we keep up this pace, by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic than fish. Furthermore, plastic has been found in 60% of all seabirds and 100% of all sea turtle species, simply because they mistake plastic for food.
